Higgins was part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon when he was kidnapped on February 17, 1988. His captors tortured and interrogated Higgins before killing him. Higgins was among the 100 victims, mostly Westerners, whom Hizballah and Hizballah-linked terrorists kidnapped and held hostage during the decade-long Lebanon hostage crisis.
