On July 15, 2002, Sheikh and three other suspects were convicted in Pakistan, and Sheikh received the death penalty.
In January 2021, the Pakistani Supreme Court acquitted those involved in Pearl’s kidnapping and murder. The United States recognizes past Pakistani actions to hold Sheikh accountable and notes that Sheikh remains detained under Pakistani law. The Pakistani government is expected to review its legal options to ensure that justice is served. The United States is also prepared to prosecute Sheikh for his horrific crimes against an American citizen.
