Em 4 de outubro de 2017, perto da vila de Tongo Tongo, no N\u00edger, extremistas ligados ao Estado Isl\u00e2mico do Grande Saara (EI-GS) emboscaram uma equipe das For\u00e7as Especiais dos EUA que estava encarregada de treinar, orientar e ajudar as for\u00e7as nigerianas no combate ao terrorismo. O ataque resultou na morte de quatro militares estadunidenses e quatro soldados nigerianos. Outros dois estadunidenses e oito nigerianos foram feridos.
