Of these letter bombs, 13 were received at the offices of the al-Hayat newspaper in New York City, Washington, D.C., and London. One bomb exploded in London, seriously injuring two people. The other three letter bombs were discovered at the U.S. federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Each of the letter bombs bore an Alexandria, Egypt postmark dated December 21, 1996, and none contained a return address. The bombs were in plain white envelopes with computer-generated addresses and various other markings.
