About
Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is a Southeast Asia-based terrorist group that seeks to establish a caliphate in the region. JI is responsible for significant terrorist attacks in the region, including the October 2002 bombing of a Bali nightclub that killed more than 200 people, the August 2003 bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta that left 12 individuals dead, and the October 2005 suicide bombing in Bali that killed 26 people.
On October 23, 2002, the U.S. Department of State designated JI as a Foreign Terrorist Organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended, and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. As a result, all of JI’s property and interests in property subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with JI. It is a crime to knowingly provide, or to attempt or conspire to provide, material support or resources to JI.
