About

Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), also known as al-Jihad, was an Egyptian extremist group founded in the 1970s. EIJ’s primary goal was to overthrow the Egyptian Government and replace it with an Islamic state. The group specialized in armed attacks against high-level Egyptian government officials. Led by Ayman al-Zawahiri, EIJ merged with al-Qa’ida in June 2001.
