About
Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information on any individual responsible for the September 4, 2025 attack targeting U.S. military personnel and property at Kismayo International Airport in southern Somalia.
The terrorist group al-Shabaab — al-Qa’ida’s principal affiliate in East Africa — claimed responsibility for the rocket and gunfire attack against U.S. military and African partner forces at the airport. U.S. military officials said the attack caused no casualties or damage.
U.S. armed forces in Somalia provide training and support to Somali and regional partners’ counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab.
Al-Shabaab is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Somalia and neighboring countries that have killed thousands of people, including U.S. citizens. The Department of State designated al-Shabaab as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in March 2008. In April 2010, al-Shabaab was also designated by the UNSC’s Somalia Sanctions Committee pursuant to paragraph 8 of resolution 1844 (2008).
